Political Tensions Rise in Bengal After BJP Election Sweep
A landmark political development took place recently when the BJP of Prime Minister Narendra Modi managed to win elections for the first time in West Bengal. The BJP claimed a sweeping victory in 206 out of 294 seats, ousting Mamata Banerjee from her 15-year-long seat. Following the results, violent protests have already occurred as at least four political activists have lost their lives while clashing with each other in Kolkata and nearby districts. The BJP rejoiced at the fact that its influence will now extend throughout all regions of the country, whereas Mamata Banerjee is rejecting the results as illegal and referring to it as "an immoral victory" by saying that the central government had interfered in the voting process. Banerjee’s term is about to expire on this Thursday.
